Rectangular storage ottoman: everyone’s favourite piece of furniture!
The rectangular ottoman is that piece of furniture that has become indispensable in the home. In particular, the model with storage has that dual function of aesthetics and “box” for storing cushions, magazines, toys and much more.
On the market there are many types of ottomans that are upholstered in different fabrics such as fabric, leather and eco-leather, and the more elegant ones in velvet. And if you feel like giving our old pouf a new look? It may not be that difficult: arm yourself with scissors, fabric and a dressmaker’s tape measure and a little creativity!
In the article a useful guide and the steps to reupholster an ottoman.
Rectangular storage ottoman: revive the upholstery
Rectangular and square ottomans are the most common to find in the home and beyond. Versatile as side tables both indoors and outdoors and in communal settings, poufs of this shape easily adapt to the style of the furniture.
A rectangular fabric storage ottoman is the best and easiest choice for upholstery. In addition to the shape, the upholstery is an element that makes the difference, which is why it becomes essential to breathe new life into the old ottoman by changing the cover. You will be able to choose the appropriate upholstery and avoid getting the wrong fabric or size by do-it-yourself. Fabric ottomans are covered with waterproof or water-repellent fabrics for outdoor use.
Renewing an ottoman can be a fun activity and an ideal pastime for lovers of fabrics and bright colours. Fabrics for upholstering a pouf range from cotton to fabrics such as microfibre, faux leather and velvet. Floral and geometric patterns can be chosen for the weave. Easily found in an upholstery shop even at low cost for the small quantity needed.
Ideas for upholstering an ottoman: do-it-yourself methods
We can say that there are basically two techniques for renovating a pouf. The first is to completely reupholster it by removing the old covering and putting on the new one following guides and illustrative steps. While the simpler method is to cover the pouf by making a slipcover, or rather two, into which the frame and the cover will be inserted.
In both cases, the first thing to do is to get the measurements right, but how to do it? Let’s see together:
for the height, place the dressmaker’s tape measure 1 centimetre above the floor and measure the height up to the top seam.
For the width, in the case of a square ottoman it is the distance between the side seams. For the rectangular ottoman, the measurements to be taken are two.
For the lining, calculate a few extra centimetres so that it can be fitted easily.
If, on the other hand, you want to upholster an ottoman from scratch, you must
- remove the old covering: there is usually a zip or Velcro attached with pins under the pouf
- take the original flaps: the pieces of fabric will serve as a template for the new fabric, on which the new scraps will be marked with chalk
- apply the new covering: if the pouf has a metal frame you will need hot-melt glue, if it is made of wood with an upholsterer’s stapler or wide-headed pegs
- finish the ottoman: ribbons or lace can be glued to the edges or seams.
