Where to place the bed in the room to sleep better

The bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the home as it is dedicated to resting not only the body, but also the mind. This is why it is absolutely essential that it is furnished with care. From positioning the bed in the room in the right way, to choosing the colour on the walls, to evaluating the material of the furniture: there are many decisions to be made to ensure optimal rest.

Sleeping at night can depend on many external factors. Of all of them, for example, positioning the bed in the room in an inappropriate way could have a negative influence on sleep.

Positioning the bed in the bedroom in the correct way to promote a restful sleep

Within the bedroom, nothing can be left to chance even the position of the bed must be well thought out in relation to the whole context. This is to promote relaxation of the body but also of the mind.

To position the bed in the room optimally, it is of fundamental importance to start with the choice of the wall. It would be better to prefer an internal wall and not one that faces outwards. This is because external walls can, for obvious reasons, be colder and less protected. If the room, then, faces a less than quiet space, such as a busy street, one can consider soundproofing the room and thus solve the problem of night noises.

The ideal position of the room for sleeping is to the north or east. This is to avoid long exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day. Placed to the west, in fact, during the summer season, the bedroom could become excessively hot and thus prevent optimal sleep throughout the night.

Where should the bed be positioned in relation to openings and walls?

The ideal position of the bed is therefore with the headboard against the wall, not facing the door or window. This is because a negative feeling of lack of privacy and a limited sense of protection and seclusion should not be accentuated. It is also a good idea not to place the bed under a window: should one find oneself making this obligatory choice, one should remember to close the shutters tightly before going to bed and also choose a blackout curtain so as to avoid disturbing artificial light from outside during the night and natural sunlight waking one up too early in the morning.

How to position the remaining furniture in the room in relation to the bed?

It is clear that, as well as the bed, all the other furnishings in the room must also be positioned in the best possible way. In detail, for example, it would be best to avoid placing the wardrobe in front of the bed because its large size could give a feeling of heaviness and suffocation to those who have to rest lying on the bed. Better therefore that the wardrobe be positioned, naturally where possible, beside the bed or even behind it, and not in front of it.

Positioning the bed in the room to sleep better: the rules of Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an oriental discipline that aims to seek and promote, at the same time, harmony within a domestic environment. And it does this by evaluating very carefully the arrangement of furniture and decorative objects; the orientation and placement of lights, plants and obviously the position of the bed within the room.

To realise a good interior design, in the bedroom as in the rest of the house, does not only mean working on the aesthetic factor: special attention must also be paid to the energy forces that can be restrained by walls or furniture.

Starting from this concept, the reason why the position of a house, the layout of the rooms and also, therefore, the position of the bed within the sleeping room, is important. Feng Shui recommends positioning the head of the bed towards the north so that the negative pole of the earth connects with the positive pole of the sleeper, guaranteeing a restful sleep.

In addition, according to this oriental discipline that has now also come to the West, the bedroom, which must be as far as possible from the entrance door, must not be too spacious as it must be able to transmit a sense of security, welcome, warmth. A bed placed in a room that is too spacious encourages a negative feeling of dispersion which, in turn, would disturb sleeping at night.

On the wall behind the headboard, it is also a good idea not to hang large and heavy objects, especially mirrors, which do not help you sleep well.
